Cuttack: Surgeons at the Plastic Surgery Department of SCB Medical College and Hospital here achieved a rare feat by replanting the amputated arm of a youth in an 8-hour-long surgery on Thursday.
According to reports, the left arm of Prakash Das, a 22-year-old youth from Balasore, lost his left arm some time back in an unpleasant incident while returning from his tuition classes. Addressing the media on Friday, the head of the Plastic Surgery Department at SCB Medical College and Hospital, Dr Bibhuti Bhushan Naik said, “Few months back, we did not have the replant facility here. However, since the last three months, we have successfully conducted two such operations.”
“Very few people are aware of the progress made by our department. One of them is the MLA from Balasore who called up the department and told us about Prakash’s condition. We asked him to send Prakash to our hospital and we would do our best,” Dr Naik said.
“Prakash came to our department with his amputated hand. We immediately placed his amputated arm in a sealed plastic bag and conducted several tests. Surgeons and doctors from other departments in the hospital were also consulted and together we undertook the operation to replant Prakash’s arm on Thursday. We were successful after 8 hours of effort. Today, he is completely fit and recovering, and we are sure that he will be able to lead a normal life,” Dr Nayak elaborated.
Talking to the media, Prakash said that he is obliged to the doctors for replanting his arm, which is a very difficult process. When asked how he lost his arm, Prakash said, “During a scuffle over land, some people in my village chopped off my hand with a sharp weapon. I had resigned to my fate until the doctors at the SCB Medical College and Hospital gave me a new lease of life yesterday,” he said.
