Bhubaneswar: Odisha’s self-styled godman Sura Baba alias Surendranath Mishra got released from Jharpada on Friday evening, three days after he was granted bail by the Supreme Court in a land fraud case of Chhatrapur in Ganjam district. He was behind bars for more than two years.
As Orissa High Court had earlier rejected his bail plea in the case, Sura Baba and his son had moved the apex court for bail. It may be recalled here that Sura Baba and his two sons were arrested by the Balipatna police under the Commissionerate Police here on August 31, 2015.
Sura Baba and his sons were lodged in the Jharpada Special Jail here.
Close on the heels of the controversies first erupted against self-proclaimed godman Sarathi Baba and his Barimula Ashram in Kendrapda, Sura Baba’s Trahi Achyuta Ashram also surfaced leading to his arrest by Odisha Crime Branch.
Besides, Enforcement Directorate (ED) had attached Sura Baba’s moveable and immoveable properties worth Rs 15 crore on March 30 this year.
The ED had attached properties belonging to Sura Baba and his two sonsTrilochan and Biranchi Narayan.
The attached properties include Sura Baba’s Trahi Achuta Ashram, his house and lands at Jhinti Sasan on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar and deposits in various banks held by him and his sons.
The attachment of properties has been made under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
