Senior IPS Officer B.K. Sharma Assumes Office As New DG (Prisons)

**Bhubaneswar: ** Senior IPS officer and former special DG of Odisha Crime Branch B.K. Sharma on Monday formally took over charge from ADG Arun Ray as the new DG of Prisons.

Additional DG Arun Ray has been attached to the State Police Headquarters.

Talking to media soon after at helms of affairs, the new DG (prisons) said, “Today I took over the charge. For me it’s a new office. From the initial briefing here I could perceive that it is a challenging task for me. Being in police for many years, I have certain amount of knowledge of jail affairs, but it’s incomplete. There are many pending works to be taken up. My predecessor has done a good job on it. Some new jail construction work is on which is to be completed. Also I have to expedite the new Jail Manual making task.”

“Priority will be given to improve the lifestyle and basic amenities of the jail inmates. Stress will be given to impart yoga and spiritual training in a bid to reform them. Focus will also be on evolving out special programme for the female jail inmates. Such as for their educational and vocational training. Some of our jails used to implement certain vocational courses. For instance, Baripada jail. Now I’ll look into what good programmes can be introduced in the jails now,” Sharma stated.

He also added, “Stress will also be laid on the issues and problems of the jail staff. What career prospect can be improved, prospective incentives and future training for enhancing the professionalism among the jail employees.”

“Thirdly, infrastructure, like new jails, jail security, CCTV, expansion of amenities, etc. I’ll try to make progress on all these aspects I discussed now,” the new DG (Prisons) informed media.

Notably, Odisha Government on Wednesday last week effected a major reshuffle in the senior IPS officers’ level and B.K. Sharma was entrusted with the new assignment.

While former Vigilance Director Dr R.P. Sharma has been made the new Director General of Police (DGP) of the State, his predecessor K.B. Singh has been posted as the CMD, OSRTC.
