Seriously Injured Patient Can’t Be Denied Surgery On Covid Plea: OHRC

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) today mentioned that a serious patient requiring immediate attention cannot be denied treatment/surgery on the plea of Covid.
Taking up urgently a complaint filed by one Pabitra Nayak of Chandrasekharpur-based Arabinda Nagar slum area today, OHRC issued notice to the Director of KIMS Hospital here to “immediately take up required treatment/surgery of the patient Shri Ranjit Nayak if he is still in their hospital soon after getting the copy of this order. The cost of treatment shall be borne by the patient himself.”

The order also mentioned, “The Secretary to Government, Health & Family Welfare Department, Odisha, Bhubaneswar is specifically called upon to case an inquiry into the allegation made in the petition and submit his report to the Commission by 15.10.2020.”

Posting the next hearing to 15.10.2020, OHRC has also directed Director, Capital Hospital, Director, KIMS, Director, AIIMS, Bhubaneswar and IIC, Chandrasekharpur PS to submit their responses by the fixed date for next hearing.

As per the petition filed by the complainant, his brother Ranjit Nayak suffered from stabbing injury on 08.09.2020 and has been moving from hospital to hospital for his treatment but of no use.
“Though he has moved to Government hospitals like Capital Hospital, AIIMS, Bhubaneswar and SCB Medical College & Hospital, Cuttack as well as different private hospitals at Bhubaneswar, but no surgery could be conducted and no treatment could be offered to him. The patient is a young man,” the complaint mentioned.

OHRC observed, “The facts stated in the petition, if true, reveals a very sad state of affairs in treating a patient in need. However, the patient is now stated to be admitted in KIMS Hospital, Bhubaneswar. Therefore, the Director, KIMS Hospital, Bhubaneswar (OP No.3) shall immediately take up required treatment/surgery of the patient Shri Ranjit Nayak if he is still in their hospital soon after getting the copy of this order. The cost of treatment shall be borne by the patient himself.”
