Balasore: As many as seven livestock animals died including three cows, a calf and three bulls after coming in contact with hanging live wires at Bartana village under Khaira police limits in Balasore district on Wednesday morning.
Residents, meanwhile, blamed the Energy department for the death of the animals.
They alleged that dangling wires tied to electric poles have emerged as a major threat to cattle in the locality. Their requests to the concerned authorities to repair the electric pole so that wires would not cause life risks for commuters and cattle yielded no results. Instead of repairing the pole, the department provided electricity supply to the locality following Kalabaisakhi on Monday night. And this led to the freak mishap. Such careless attitude can lead to the loss of human lives.
Meanwhile, villagers demanded compensation for owners of the cattle died in the freak mishap. The villagers have threatened to hit the street if the department would not take a call as soon as possible.
It is also learnt that some farmers put up wires along the periphery of their fields to protect the standing crops from damage by wild animals and stray cattle. During the night, they connect these wires to electrical mains to ward off wild animals. In the process, cattle and other wild species keep dying after coming in contact with such illegal systems.
