Bhubaneswar: In a horrifying incident that has sent shockwaves through the region, a seven-year-old girl was allegedly raped and murdered in Sundargarh district. The accused, who has been detained by police, reportedly confessed to the crime, leading authorities to the victim’s body in a forest area on Wednesday.
According to police sources in Rajgangpur, the minor girl was lured away from her home on March 9 by the accused. He allegedly took her to a secluded forested area near the town, where he committed the sexual assault.
Preliminary investigations suggest that after the assault, the girl threatened to inform her family about the crime. Fearing exposure, the accused allegedly killed her by striking her head with a large stone. He then attempted to conceal the body by hiding it under a heavy rock before fleeing the scene.
The girl’s disappearance on Monday prompted a frantic search by her family and neighbors, who also filed a missing person report with the local police. During their investigation, authorities developed suspicions about the individual’s involvement. Upon being taken in for questioning, the accused broke down and confessed to the entire sequence of events.
Acting on his confession, a police team immediately rushed to the forest location. The body of the child was recovered from under the stone, as described by the accused. It has been sent for a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.
The Rajgangpur police have formally detained the accused and registered a case. A comprehensive investigation is currently underway to gather all evidence and build a strong case, as the community grapples with the aftermath of the brutal crime.
