Bhubaneswar: A well-marked low-pressure system brewing in the Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify into a cyclonic storm by tomorrow morning and develop into a severe cyclonic storm by May 26 evening, predicted the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
As per the latest information, the IMD has issued warnings, anticipating the cyclone to escalate into a severe storm by May 25. It would reach the Bangladesh and Bengal coastline on Sunday evening.
Once the system turns into a cyclone, it will be called Remal, a name given by Oman.
Cyclone Remal is likely to move northwards, approaching the Bangladesh and West Bengal coasts by the evening of May 26. The IMD predicts wind speeds ranging from 100 to 120 kmph, classifying it as a severe cyclonic storm.
However, the cyclone bulletin has made no mention of the possible landfall time and area.
Under its influence, the sea condition will be very rough for which the IMD has advised fishermen not to venture into sea between May 24 and May 27 although the cyclone does not have any direct impact on Odisha.
On May 26th and 27th, light to moderate rainfall is expected at most places, with heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated locations, over the coastal districts of West Bengal and the adjoining districts of north Odisha, IMD said.
Under cyclone impact, several parts of Odisha will witness rainfall activities. Heavy to very heavy rain is likely at some places in Balasore, Bhadrak and Kendrapada districts
Similarly, light to moderate rainfall is expected at most places, with heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated locations, over Mizoram, Tripura, and South Manipur on May 26 and May 27, said IMD reports.
