**Angul:** A shocking incident of honour killing has been reported from Odisha’s Angul district. The police recovered mortal remains of a new-born baby buried allegedly by his maternal grandmother.
According to reports, it is alleged that an unwed woman gave birth to the baby boy. To save the honour of the family, the mother of the woman strangulated the new-born and buried on the outskirts near a canal.
The police acted on a tip-off by a local youth organization, Jubashakti Swetchasevi Sangathan. and exhumed the buried remains of the infant.
“I was informed by some of our women members that 15 days back, a baby was killed and discarded. I immediately submitted a written complaint to the police and want this matter to be properly investigated so that the culprits can be identified and punished,” said Brahmajyoti Mishra, president of the youth organization.
“We retrieved the mortal remains of the baby in the presence of magistrate with the aid of scientific team. It will be sent for DNA test to ascertain the gender of the baby,” said IIC Subhash Sahu.
He further clarified, “It is suspected that this must have been done in the name of honour. Preliminary investigation suggests that the baby was of an unwed mother. But, the investigation is still going on and we will soon be able to know the exact cause behind this act.
