Bargarh: In preparation for the upcoming Rath Yatra in Puri, a five-member team from the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) has arrived in Bargarh to survey the Padmapur forest for high-quality wood required to construct the sacred chariots.
The team, accompanied by the Bargarh Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), will identify and select trees that meet the traditional specifications for the chariots.
According to official estimates, a total of 814 wooden logs are needed this year for the construction of the three chariots of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra. Among these, 72 pieces of Phasi wood (a specific variety used for crafting the chariot wheels) is likely to be sourced exclusively from the Padmapur forest range.
Sudarshan Mekap, a member of the Puri Temple’s wood inspection team, confirmed that the Phasi wood is crucial due to its durability and flexibility, making it ideal for the chariot wheels. “The selection process follows ancient traditions, and only the finest wood is chosen to ensure the chariots’ structural integrity,” Mekap stated.
The SJTA has already sent an official communication to the Bargarh DFO, seeking necessary permissions and logistical support for the transportation of the wood to Puri. Once the survey is completed, the felling and transportation process will begin under strict supervision to maintain religious and environmental protocols.
The Rath Yatra, one of India’s most revered festivals, sees lakhs of devotees pulling the massive chariots through Puri’s streets.
