Puri: Devotees will not be allowed entry into the Shree Jagannath Temple in Puri until 2 PM on Tuesday, as the temple prepares for the sacred Senapata ritual of the deities.
The Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) made the announcement on Monday, citing the observance of key rituals ahead of the Snana Yatra and Ratha Yatra.
The temple gates will remain closed to the public due to the Pahuda ritual following tonight’s Ratra Alati, and tomorrow’s Senapata ceremony scheduled on the occasion of Jyeshtha Shukla Chaturdashi Tithi.
The Senapata ritual is a significant prelude to the upcoming festivals. During this ritual, the Daitapati servitors—regarded as descendants of Lord Jagannath’s original tribal devotees—adorn the deities with Senapata Bastra, a unique set of ceremonial attire crafted from sacred Baula wood. This divine armour is believed to symbolically protect the deities and prepare them for the public rituals that follow, especially Snana Yatra, which will be held on June 11.
The Senapata ritual not only reinforces the ancient traditions associated with the temple but also underscores the deep cultural and spiritual preparation leading up to Odisha’s most awaited chariot festival, the Ratha Yatra.
