Bhubaneswar: In a significant development, the Similipal Tiger Reserve has reported a tiger population of 40, with 6 cubs, 17 tigresses, and 13 male tigers. This marks a notable increase from last year’s count of 27 tigers and 8 cubs. This increase comes following the successful breeding of well-known tigresses Zeenat and Jamuna
Talking to the media, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) Prem Kumar Jha revealed promising data.
He said,” Going by the latest camera trap survey findings, Similipal is home to 40 Royal Bengal tigers, including six adorable cubs, 17 tigresses, and 13 black tigers. However, the gender of two adult tigers is yet to be confirmed. The forest department has set a target to increase the tiger population to 80-100 within the next 10-12 years through focused conservation programmes, habitat improvement, and stringent anti-poaching measures.”
It is pertinent to mention that the recent count follows the 2024 State Tiger Census, Odisha’s first dedicated tiger population assessment, which reported 27 adult tigers and 8 cubs in Similipal.
The new figures demonstrate a clear upward trend in population growth and successful breeding, showcasing a positive trajectory for tiger conservation efforts.
