Bhubaneswar: Odisha has received a Royal Bengal Tiger from Maharashtra and will be rehabilitated in the core area of Similipal Tiger Reserve in Mayurbhanj district.
According to reports, a special team of the Similipal Tiger Reserve reached the reserve forest with the Royal Bengal Tiger on Sunday. The tiger has been translocated from Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve in Maharashtra to the Similipal Tiger Reserve with a view to augment the population of big cats in the state.
The Odisha government had written to the National Tiger Conservation Authority to consider translocation of tigers to Similipal Tiger Reserve. Last week, a special team comprising Similipal Director, Assistant Director, veterinary doctors, and a rapid response team flew to Maharashtra to bring the tiger from Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve.
Odisha now plans to bring five tigers, three for Debrigarh Wildlife Sanctuary in the Bargarh district and two for Similipal Tiger Reserve, as a part of the big cat relocation project.
