Six Arrestees Under Treatment At SCB, Kin Allege Custodial Torture

Pipili: Family members of six persons, arrested by Pipili police on charges of assaulting a youth and now undergoing treatment at SCB Medical College & Hospital in Cuttack, have levelled charges of custodial torture against the police.

Reportedly, the six identified as Hafiz Khan (25), Pratap Kumar Behera (23), Raju Behera (18), Mohammad Tafiq alias Juma (18), Jagannath Puspalak alias Jaga (19) and Dharanidhar Behera (24) had allegedly attacked one Sajid Hussain on the night of November 13 over some past enmity.

Sajid was immediately admitted to the Community Health Centre (CHC) in Pipili and later shifted to a private hospital in Bhubaneswar, where his condition is stated to be critical. Based on a complaint lodged by Sajid’s brother, Jahid Hussain, police arrested the six on November 14.

After being forwarded to court, they were sent to Nimapada jail on November 19, however, jail authorities refused to lodge the six accused after observing their health condition. Subsequently, police took them to Nimpada Government Hospital from where they were referred to SCB Hospital.

While the health condition of the six is stated to be critical, family members have alleged that they have been brutally beaten by police and sought a proper investigation into the matter.
