Berhampur: One girl died and another went missing after six girls were swept away by a strong current in the sea in Odisha’s Ganjam district early on Thursday morning.
The deceased girl has been identified as Swapna Rani Pandit from the Kanisi area, while the girl who went missing has been identified as Pragyan Rani Tripathy from the Seragarh area.
According to reports, six friends had gone to watch a jatra in the neighbourhood and this morning they went to bathe in the sea near Aryapalli village. Even as the girls were enjoying their bath together in the seawater, all were swept away by a strong sea tide.
The villagers successfully rescued five girls from the water and rushed them to the Chhatrapur Sub-Divisional Hospital. One of these girls was declared brought dead by the doctors.
A rescue operation is underway to trace the missing girl. Meanwhile, a team of Coast Guard left Bhubaneswar by helicopter to facilitate the rescue operation.
