Slum Dwellers Pelt Stone During Eviction Drive In Berhampur, BeMC Staff Injured

Berhampur: A driver of earthmoving machinery was seriously injured as slum dwellers resorted to stone-pelting during an eviction drive by the Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BeMC) at the Goudabandha Harijan Sahi in Lanjipalli Deepa Sahi.

A woman, a resident of the slum also sustained minor injuries as bricks fell on her leg during the eviction drive.

As many as 112 houses will be evicted as per the order of the National Green Tribunal (NGT), informed BeMC Additional Commissioner Asutosh Samal.

Samal said that all of them have been allotted houses under the Rajiv Awas Yojana at Nehru Nagar.

“While people were dismantling their belongings themselves, a few bricks fell on a woman. Agitated over it people pelted stones. Four-five officials of BeMC have been injured due to stone-pelting by the slum dwellers. Our JCB driver has been injured in the stone-pelting. The Enforcement Officer has been also attacked,” said Samal.

As it is already evening, the eviction drive has been suspended for today and will be resumed as per decision to be taken by higher officials, Samal added.

He informed that around 30 dwellings were evicted in the operation today.
