Smart City’s Water Logging Issue: BMC To Construct Seven New Drains

**Bhubaneswar**: In a bid to contain the water logging issue in the smart city’s low-lying areas, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) plans to construct seven new drains with an estimated budget of Rs 9.45 crore.

The plan that is currently in the tendering process, will include construction of internal drainage system with covered slabs at the following five areas: Ananta Vihar Phase-II (Ward No. 62), Dumduma Housing Board Colony Phase-IV (Ward No. 65), Jagannath Vihar (Ward No. 24), Bhagabat Sandhan area (Ward No. 19) and Guru Kelu Charan Mohapatra Park Road. Renovation of the drainage channels in Ahalya Nagar area (Ward No. 3) and back side of Sriya Talkies (Ward No. 42), is also included in the project.

The civic body also decided that a vigilant eye will be kept on the low-lying areas of the city. Total BMC jurisdiction area was divided into 12 sub-zones and each nodal officer was asked to prepare a detailed report of the drainage situation of their assigned area.

Sanitation agencies were ordered to be present with required number of workers, apparatus and vehicles for the duration of this project. Mechanical Engineering wing of the civic body was asked to hire as many pumps as required to de-water the low-lying areas across the city.

The drainage development and renovation of the existing system in the proposed seven areas is estimated to cost Rs 86.30 lakh, Rs 1.51 crore, Rs 49.98 lakh, Rs 2.30 crore, Rs 12.84 lakh, Rs 3.50 crore and Rs 65 lakh respectively, bringing the grand total to Rs 9.45 crore.

The review meeting was presided by the Municipal Commissioner Dr Krishan Kumar. Ward officers, sanitary inspectors, engineers and experts were also present.
