Smitarani Issue Rocks Odisha Assembly, Cong Stages Walkout

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Assembly for the second consecutive day in its ongoing winter session was witness to pandemonium over alleged  mysterious death of Smitarani Biswal, Village Level Worker (VLW)-cum-Panchayat Extension Officer (PEO) of Haridaspur in Jajpur district.

Immediately after the House assembled for the day, opposition members rushed into the well of the House and started shouting slogans.

BJP members holding placards shouted slogans demanding a discussion on the Smitarani issue by suspending Question Hour.

Unable to run the House Speaker Surjya Narayan Patro adjourned the proceedings of the House till 12 PM.

A similar situation was witnessed after House resumed at 12 PM forcing Speaker Patro to adjourn it till 12.30 PM.

Later, Minister of State for Home, Dibya Shankar Mishra kept his reply on the adjournment motion on the issue over the death of the Lady PEO of Haridaspur.

The Minister giving details of the investigations in the case so far and procedures adopted told the House that post-mortem report of Smitarani concludes that the cause of death of Smitarani Biswal was asphyxia and maybe suicidal in nature.

Not satisfied with the Minister’s reply Congress members staged a walkout demanding a CBI inquiry into the death of the PEO.
