Cuttack: Tragedy struck a family in Ekaberuan village under Niali block of Cuttack district after a man died of snakebite and his wife attempted suicide upon hearing the news.

According to reports, Surendra Swain, son of Natwar Swain, was plucking brinjals in his farmland on Saturday when he was bitten by a venomous snake. He collapsed immediately and was rushed by locals to Jagatsinghpur District Headquarters Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

Overwhelmed by grief, his wife Latika allegedly consumed poison at their residence shortly after learning of her husband’s death. She was initially treated locally but as her condition worsened, she was shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack.

The couple leaves behind two married daughters and a 30-year-old son, Tapan, who is physically challenged. The incident has cast a pall of gloom over the village.
