Baripada: In a significant step towards strengthening wildlife protection, two specially trained sniffer dogs have been inducted into the protection squad of Similipal Tiger Reserve.
The development was confirmed by Samrat Gowda, Deputy Director (South) of the Similipal Reserve Forest, on Sunday.
The two Belgian Malinois dogs—Nanta (male) and Annika (female)—recently completed intensive training at a specialized facility in Secunderabad of Telangana.
According to Gowda, Nanta has been trained in tracking, while Annika is skilled in detecting wildlife contraband such as ivory, animal skins, and other illegal products.
“The inclusion of these dogs will significantly enhance patrolling capabilities and aid in the detection of contraband in Similipal and surrounding areas,” Gowda said.
Forest officials believe the deployment of trained sniffer dogs will act as a strong deterrent against poaching and illegal wildlife trade, further supporting the Reserve’s ongoing conservation efforts.
