**Bhubaneswar: ** When festivals of two different religions fall side by side and involve public processions and demonstrations, it can be a tricky situation for the authorities in charge of law and order. This issue was in the news in the neighbouring state of West Bengal, when Mamata Banerjee tried to prevent a clash of Durga Puja idol immersion and Muharram, both of which fell on the same date of October 1, by denying permission for the former, but was ultimately overruled by the Calcutta High Court. Nothing of that sort has been decided in Odisha, yet in a press conference called on Thursday evening, Rajendra Prasad Sharma, the Direct General of Police, Odisha highlighted the need to keep track of social media, where he believes most of the rumours spread like fire and create communal discontent.
“We are aware that social media may play havoc sometimes by circulating false information and rumours, that’s why we have instructed the Superintendents of Police and the DCPs to keep a close watch on any kind of circulation of false information and rumours, and the moment it comes to our notice, then immediately we clarify it and give correct information to the people, and we also request the people to verify such information, before reacting or losing emotions or tempers. That is very important, and each member of public knows it that sometimes false information is being circulated and exaggerated, which they should verify through proper authorities before believing or reacting to that. And, if it comes to our notice through any channels, we shall take timely steps to stop that and circulate correct information about that.”
Meanwhile, to curb all kinds of criminal activities during the festive season in the state, Odisha Police have arrested more than hundred criminals and seized illegal firearms, liquor and hemp as well.
“Around 1068 identified habitual offenders have been booked under Section 110 of Criminal Penal Code, out of which 112 criminals have already been arrested. Under 510 of IPC some 592 drunkards causing public nuisance have been arrested. An execution drive for issuance of Non-Bailable Warrants (NBW) for habitual criminals involved in snatching, robbery and motorcycle theft, etc, was launched through which 1843 NBWs were executed and 1100 NBWs were recalled.” The DGP added.
