**Soro (Balasore):** Demanding fulfilment of their nine-point charter of demands, the elected members of the Soro Civic Council led by its chairperson on Tuesday sat on a ‘dharna’ (sit in protest) before the electricity office here.
Led by chairperson Subhasmita Mohanty, the 19 councillors demanded that all BPL households residing under the municipal jurisdiction should be supplied with electricity connections free of cost under the Odisha Government’s Biju Urban Area Electrification Yojana.
Besides, they also demanded electrification in different wards, street lights from Bagudi Chhak to Soro College Chhak and replacement of the old iron lamp posts of the all 19 wards.
Subhasmita Mohanty, chairperson, Soro Municipality, said, “We’re here for the fulfilment of our 9-point charter of demands. Out of them, our demands are three. Till date, the BPL families residing here are yet to reap the benefit of free electricity connections under the Biju Saharanchala Vidyutikarana Yojana. Most of the existing iron lamp posts in the 19 wards have rusted and corroded which need to replaced immediately. In most of the places the live wires are dangling in a dangerous way for which we demand they must be replaced with safe cabling. If our demands are not fulfilled, we’ll resort to mass agitation and eventually fast-unto-death strike.”
