Bhubaneswar: The Southwest Monsoon is likely to arrive in Odisha on June 9, the Bhubaneswar regional centre of the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) in Bhubaneswar predicted on Thursday. Rains are likely to arrive in south and coastal Odisha before reaching other areas of the state.
The weather office said the prevailing conditions are favourable for the onset of the Southwest Monsoon in Odisha, which normally enters Odisha in the second week of June.
Manorama Mohanty, director of IMD Bhubaneswar said, “The Southwest Monsoon usually arrives in Odisha towards the second week of June – 12 or 13. We expect the Monsoon to touch south Odisha in the next three to four days. Till now, conditions are favourable.”
Southwest Monsoon touched the Andamans and Kerala well in advance. It normally sets in over Kerala on June 1 and advances to North-Eastern parts of India in the next couple of days.
On the other hand, the weather department has warned that heatwave conditions will continue in western Odisha for two more days. An orange warning has been issued for Bolangir and Bargarh, while a yellow warning has been issued for Thursday for Kalahandi, Nuapada, Subarnapur, and Sambalpur. The weather center has predicted that the day temperature will likely be above 40°C in some districts of interior Odisha. Similarly, there is a risk o light to moderate rain, and lightning may occur in some districts of interior Odisha.
