Bhubaneswar: A special training camp for Crime Scene Inspection Officers was inaugurated on Wednesday at the Urban Police and Traffic Training Institute (UPTTI) premises in Laxmisagar, Bhubaneswar. The programme is being conducted jointly by the Biju Patnaik State Police Academy (BPSPA) and the State Forensic Science Laboratory (SFSL).
Director General of Police (DGP) Yogesh Bahadur Khurania attended the inaugural ceremony as the chief guest and formally launched the training camp.
Addressing the gathering, the DGP highlighted key provisions of the newly enacted Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). He stated that the new law emphasizes speedy justice through the use of modern scientific methods during investigations, including audio and video recording of crime scenes and procedures.
In line with these reforms, the DGP announced that two Crime Scene Inspection Officers will be appointed in every police station across the state. He informed that eligible constables and home guards with appropriate educational qualifications will be selected for these roles and provided with a six-week intensive training programme. The training will focus on the new Indian criminal laws, scientific investigation techniques, and the responsibilities of officers at crime scenes.
A total of 74 trainees from different districts of Odisha are participating in the current training camp, including 60 constables and 14 home guards. The programme will be conducted by experienced forensic experts and senior police officers, who will impart both practical and technical knowledge. The training will cover securing crime scenes, conducting detailed inspections, and collecting crucial physical and digital evidence.
Expressing confidence in the initiative, the DGP said the trained officers would play a vital role in ensuring effective investigation and securing punishment for offenders. He added that the programme would enhance the participants’ skills in forensic science, digital evidence collection, and proactive crime scene management.
Senior officials present at the inaugural event included Director, State Forensic Science Laboratory, Santosh Bala; Inspector General of Police (Training), Biju Patnaik State Police Academy, Anup Sahu; and Principal of the Urban Police and Traffic Training Institute, Prafulla Kumar Singh.
