Jeypore (Koraput): In a tragic road accident near Umuri under Jeypore Sadar police station limits on Saturday, a speeding SUV rammed into two scooter riders, killing one on the spot and leaving the other critically injured.

The deceased has been identified as Vivek Nayak of Umuri village. The injured rider, Satish Sahu (30) of Nua Sahi, was initially admitted to the District Headquarters Hospital in Koraput. Due to his deteriorating condition, he was later referred to Visakhapatnam for advanced treatment.

According to sources, Vivek Nayak was returning home on his scooter after finishing work in Jeypore, while Satish Sahu was on his way to ITI College. At that time, an SUV coming from the Borigumma side at high speed reportedly collided with both scooters. The impact proved fatal for Nayak, who died on the spot. The accident occurred right in front of his residence, adding to the shock and grief of his family and neighbors.

Local residents rushed the injured Satish to the hospital. Meanwhile, the driver of the SUV surrendered at Jeypore Sadar police station following the incident.

Vivek Nayak was a noted cultural figure in the region. A Grade-B flautist with All India Radio (Akashvani Kendra), he was widely respected for his contribution to music. He also served as a music teacher at Paribeda Sangeet Vidyalaya and was known for nurturing young talent in the area.

Following the incident, family members and locals staged a road blockade at Umuri around 7 PM, demanding adequate compensation for the bereaved family.

Additional Tehsildar Chitta Ranjan Patnaik reached the spot and provided ₹10,000 as immediate assistance from the Red Cross Fund. Sadar police station officer Sachindra Nayak was also present at the scene and engaged with the protesters to restore normalcy.

Police have initiated an investigation into the accident.
