Bhubaneswar: Sports & Youth Affairs Minister Tusharkanti Behera today put to rest the controversy triggered over Odisha government’s claim of Birsa Munda Stadium in Rourkela being the world’s biggest hockey stadium.
“Now FIH has certified that in terms of seating capacity, the newly built Birsa Munda International Stadium at Rourkela which has a capacity of nearly 21,000, in terms of seating capacity it is the largest in the world,” informed Behera.
Referring to reports in the mainstream media and social media that the Birsa Munda Stadium at Rourkela is not the largest and larger stadiums exist at Lahore and one in US, Behera said, “I want to again inform you that we have been certified by FIH. We have never certified ourselves, we have published it after it has been certified by the FIH. In terms of seating capacity, it is highest. Not only in India, it is go to draw traction outside India”.
The Minister said that after Chief Minister’s inauguration of Birsa Munda Stadium it has drawn the world’s attention.
“Odisha’s capabilities, development of sports infrastructure and the successful organisation of events earlier am hopeful that we will be successfully organising for the second time the FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup to be held from January 19 to 29. I appeal all starting from spectators, sports lovers, sports organisers, and players to make the event a success as it is a matter of glory and pride not only for Odisha but for country as well”.
