Bhubaneswar: The Paradip Marine police in Odisha’s Jagatsinghur district shifted the suspected ‘spy pigeon’ to the Pigeon and Dog Squad of the state police in Cuttack on Thursday.
The pigeon landed on a fishing trawler ‘Sarathi’ mid-sea off the Konark coast in the Puri district of Odisha about 10 days ago with a mini camera and a microchip fitted to its legs and coded messages on its wings. The bird was handed over to Paradip Marine Police on Wednesday.
The police have sent the camera and the microchip to the State Forensic Laboratory (SFL) in Bhubaneswar to ascertain if these gadgets were meant for spying. The SFL will also try to locate the origin of the pigeon as well as the gadgets.
While panic gripped the people of Paradip after the ‘spy pigeon’ was found, different agencies are investigating the incident and further details are awaited. Experts at the Pigeon and Dog Squad are examining the bird to ascertain whether it was trained for spying and the place of its origin.
Earlier, Jagatsinghpur SP Rahul PR had said they will seek the help of experts to decipher the text on the wings of the pigeon.
