**Balasore**: A statue of former President of India, APJ Abdul Kalam was unveiled at Chandipur, Balasore by the MLA, Jeevan Pradeep Das to commemorate his first death anniversary.
Missile Man of India, APJ Abdul Kalam was elected the 11th President of India in 2002, with the support of both the ruling party BJP and the opposition party, Indian National Congress and was widely referred to as the ‘People’s President’. He completed his term and returned back to his civilian life of education, public service and writing.
Also known as the Missile Man of India, he is known for his work on the development of ballistic missile and launch vehicle technology. He worked for four decades in Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and Indian Space and Research Organization (ISRO) and played a pivotal role in India’s Pokhran-II nuclear tests in 1998.
Kalam collapsed and died from an apparent cardiac arrest on 27 July 2015, aged 83 while delivering a lecture at the Indian Institute of Management Shillong.
