Bhubaneswar: The Special Task Force (STF) on Wednesday arrested a man on charges of trading with elephant tusk in Angul. The suspected poacher has been identified as Sudar Naik, a resident of Hatasiunali in Ranibandha under Thakurgarh police limits in Angul disrtrict.
The STF team was tipped about the trade following which a raid was carried out near Antulia under Angul forest division, a senior STF official said.
Naik was found in possession of an elephant tusk during the raid on Tuesday. “He could not produce any valid authority in support of possession of Elephant Tusk, for which he has been detained and handed over to forest officials for further action,” the official added.
Further investigation is on. During last one year, special drive against the wildlife criminals/poachers was launched in Odisha. The STF has seized 18 Leopard skin, 10 Elephant Tusks, 2 deer skin, 5 pangolins and 15 kg pangolin scales.
Total 37 wildlife criminals have been arrested during this period. “STF is the specialized wing of Odisha Police to curb the organized crime in the State. Wild life crimes remain the one of the focus area of STF and STF will continue its drive against the wildlife crime and criminals,” he added.
