Bhubaneswar: To put a check on rampant crime against wildlife, the Special Task Force (STF) today released a mobile phone number asking the public to share information/intelligence related to wildlife crime.
“All are requested to share information/intelligence related to wildlife crime on the Mobile No. 9439263646,” said a press note issued by the STF.
The press note said that the names of the informers would be kept confidential.
Further, in case of specific and pinpointed information leading to seizure/arrest, the concerned informer will be suitably rewarded.
On the basis of reliable information, the STF team conducted a raid at Bolagarh in Khordha district during a deal for the sale of leopard skin by wildlife criminals on the intervening night of April 1/2.
The STF has arrested two persons Sudhira Behera, and Subash Chandra Behera both of Nayagarh in this connection.
The STF has seized one leopard skin and other incriminating materials from their possession.
“As the accused persons could not produce any valid authority in support of the possession of such leopard skin, they have been arrested,” the press note stated.
In this connection, the STF has registered a case against the duo under sections 379/411/120(B) of IPC read with 51 of Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972.
The press note said that seized leopard skin will be sent to Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun for chemical examination.
Further investigation into the matter is underway.
In the last one year, a special drive against wildlife criminals/poachers have been launched and STF has seized as many as 12 nos leopard skin, 06 nos elephant tusk, 02 deerskin, 02 live pangolins, and 05 kg pangolin scales and arrested 24 wildlife criminals.
A total of 13 cases have been registered against wildlife criminals.
STF is the specialized wing of Odisha Police to curb organized crime in the State. Wildlife crimes remain one of the focus areas of STF.
