Bhubaneswar: The Higher Education Department of Odisha is actively planning to resume student union elections in colleges across the state this year, as announced by Higher Education Minister Suryabanshi Suraj.
The Minister’s statement has generated enthusiasm among students and academic institutions, signalling a potential revival of the democratic process in colleges after a period of suspension.
Speaking to reporters, the Higher Education Minister emphasised the government’s commitment to conducting the elections without disrupting the academic schedule.
“The state government is firmly committed to resuming student union elections this year. We are expediting the admission process for Plus III courses to ensure a seamless election process. Our aim is to complete the academic curriculum before the Dussehra break, allowing sufficient time for the electoral process.
“We are keen on bringing back the elections, but in a manner that does not disrupt students’ academic activities,” the Higher Education Minister added, underscoring the department’s focus on balancing education and extracurricular activities.
The resumption of student union elections is seen as a significant step toward fostering democratic participation and leadership among students. The elections, which were paused in previous years due to various reasons, including logistical challenges and the pandemic, have long been a platform for students to engage in campus governance and develop leadership skills.
