Bhubaneswar: A protest by the student wing of the Congress turned violent in Bhubaneswar when police clashed with demonstrators in Bhubaneswar, on Wednesday. The student wing of Congress launched the agitation demanding immediate students’ union election.
As agitators attempted to march towards the Odisha Assembly, police intervened, leading to a scuffle between the cops and agitators. Several Congress activists were taken into preventive custody, said sources.
Protestors alleged that the Odisha government had announced that the students’ union polls would be held next year. This year, the Odisha government claims that there is no time to hold students’ union elections this year.
“It is utterly unacceptable and we strongly condemn it. This is a clear attempt to suppress the democratic rights of students and deny them their rightful representation. By postponing the elections, the government is essentially silencing the voices of students and undermining their ability to participate in the decision-making process that affects their own lives and education”, said an agitator.
