Bhubaneswar: Students’ union elections in colleges of the State will be held from next year, informed Odisha Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan.
“From next year students’ union elections in colleges will be held from next year. A decision in this regard has been almost taken,” stated Harichandan speaking to the media.
The Law Minister made the announcement while he had gone to attend the 45th foundation day of the Bishnu Samantaray Mahavidyalay at Nuahata under Barchana block of Jajpur district as the Chief Guest on Monday.
“Students’ union elections are normally held in the first week of September. We didn’t have adequate time between our formation of government and the work that needed to be done before holding students’ union elections. Therefore it could not be held this year, so all preparations for the same will be completed this year. College students’ union elections will be certainly held next year,” Harichandan clarified.
Students’ union elections in colleges have not taken place in the state since 2018. Prior to that too, college elections were stopped intermittently. While no students’ unions have been elected in the last six years on the pretext of maintaining peace on campuses, higher education institutions have been nominating student representatives to various bodies where it is required.
