Dhenkanal: A sub-adult male elephant died while undergoing treatment at Kapilash Rescue Centre on Monday.
Aged 15, the pachyderm was rescued from Athagarh Forest Division and brought to the Rescue Centre after being tranquilised by a joint team headed by doctors Indramani Nath and Ashit Chakraborty on December 10, 2024. The tusker was suffering from mouth injuries, said sources.
A thorough examination by doctors found a serious injury in the oral cavity of the elephant, with the tongue severed from its base and significant damage to the jaw area.
Despite the grave prognosis, the rescue team provided intensive care, including antibiotics, saline drops, anti-inflammatory medications, and blood enhancers. However, the elephant failed to respond to treatment despite administering life-saving steroids and eventually succumbed to its injuries at around 1 am on December 16, 2024.
