Bhubaneswar: The SUM Ultimate Medicare (SUMUM) here created medical history in Odisha on Saturday by retrieving multiple organs from a brain-dead person and giving a new lease of life to four critical patients.
According to Dr Swetapadma Dash, Chief Executive Officer of SUMUM, they retrieved two kidneys, two lungs, and the liver from brain-dead patient Prasenjit Mohanty with the support and approval of his family
While two lungs were flown to two private hospitals in New Delhi and Kolkata for transplantation, of the two kidneys, one was transplanted on a waiting patient at SUMUM on Saturday night and the other was taken to SCB Medical College Hospital in Cuttack for transplantation on another patient. The liver was transported to a private healthcare facility in New Delhi to provide a life-saving opportunity to another critical patient.
SUMUM authorities said that Mohanty, 43, was admitted to the hospital on June 22 with a severe head injury following a fall, and underwent emergency brain surgery. His condition improved somewhat after the surgery, but it deteriorated subsequently and an Apnea test conducted on June 23 signified that the patient was brain dead. A second test was done after six hours which confirmed the earlier report.
When the family members of Mohanty were informed about the patient’s medical condition, they offered to donate his organs as it could help save others’ lives.
