Sundargarh: Following concerted efforts of Sadar SDPO and Subdega Tahsildar, the 18-hours- long protest by the Tangargoan villagers under Talsara Police Station (PS) limits was withdrawn today and the agitators agreed to hand over the bodies of the road accident victims for legal formalities.
The fatal road accident that killed two local youths took place yesterday and soon after the tension prevailed till today for 18 hours.
Reports said that the officials gave a written assurance to the protestors for fulfilling their demands and the deadlock came to an end.
Tension erupted when two bike riders were hit and killed on the spot by a speedy Bolero pickup van yesterday. The two deceased persons are reported to be from Sagjore village under Talsara PS limits.
Locals did not allowing police to move the dead bodies of the two deceased. They demanded Rs 10 lakh compensation to the victims’ families, ban of cattle transport on the road and arrest of the pickup van driver.
Soon after the incident yesterday, Subdega BDO and Tahasildar along with the local police went on trying to pacify the villagers, but all in vain. On getting information, the SDPO, accompanied by a platoon of police, reached the village to bring the situation under control today.
Notably, the incident took place around 4.30 pm yesterday in which the two bike riders were hit and killed on the spot by the pickup van. While the vehicle sped away from the accident spot, irate locals detained two other cattle transporting pickup vans. Locals alleged that the guilty pickup van usually transports cattle from Sikajore market under the Kinjirkela PS limits to the adjoining Jharkhand border. The hit and run incident took place when the vehicle was returning speedily from the Jharkhand border.
