Nayagarh: The country is celebrating ‘Amrit Mahotsav’ to mark the 75th anniversary of Independent India, but superstitions continue to blur our vision. Despite being banned several decades ago, people continue with the practice of sacrifice to fulfill their desires.
One such incident was reported from Matiguda village under Banigocha police limits in Nayagarh district of Odisha where some villagers allegedly sacrificed a goat, and chicken and chanted mantras to recover a ‘gold kalash’ (golden urn) from beneath the soil.
According to reports, a local villager Ratnakar Pani and a priest convinced the villagers that valuable treasure is hidden under the soil and they could retrieve it by performing rituals and sacrificing of animals. Initially, the villagers opposed Ratnakar and the priest saying it was mere superstition. But later, some of them dug a 5-feet deep trench with the aim to recover the ‘gold kalash’. Interestingly
While the ‘promised’ golden urn was not found, some villagers informed the police about the sacrifices. Even before the police could reach the village, Ratnakar, the priest, and people misleading the villagers fled the spot.
