Bhubaneswar: The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the name of Justice Subhasis Talapatra as the next Chief Justice of the High Court of Orissa.
Justice Talapatra was elevated as a judge of the Gauhati High Court on November 15, 2011, and following the establishment of a separate High Court of Tripura in 2013, he opted for the High Court of Tripura as his parent High Court. He was transferred to the High Court of Orissa and took oath on June 10, 2022.
In addition to Justice Talapatra, the Collegium headed by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and comprising Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Sanjeev Khanna has also recommended the appointment of Chief Justices for Kerala, Manipur, Andhra Pradesh, Bombay, Telangana, and Gujarat High Courts.
After graduating in law from the University of Calcutta, Justice Talapatra enrolled with the Bar Council of the north-east states on September 12, 1990, and mainly practiced in the Agartala Bench of Gauhati High Court and appeared in constitutional, civil, and criminal cases. He was appointed senior advocate on December 21, 2004, and took oath as a permanent judge of the High Court of Tripura on September 13, 2012. He was elevated as the acting Chief Justice of Tripura High Court and served in that position from November 11, 2019, to November 15, 2019.
