Bhubaneswar: Biju Janata Dal MLA from Digapahandi Assembly seat Surya Narayan Patro has been elected as the new Odisha Assembly speaker today. The House voted in majority for Patro and he won uncontested as no other name had been recommended to the Assembly Secretary.
Proposal for Patro’s name was tabled by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and was seconded by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Bikram Kesari Arukha. Barachana MLA Amar Satpathy, who was the pro-tem Speaker, announced Patro’s name for the post and handed over the seat.
After Patro assumed charge, Naveen Patnaik and senior Congress leader Narasingha Mishra congratulated him. He assured that he would uphold the Constitution and maintain the dignity of the House.
Patro has won the Assembly elections seven times- 4 times from Mohana seat and thrice from Digahapahandi constituency. He has also held Ministerial post several times in Odisha Council of Ministers. In the previous term, he was Minister of Co-Operation, Food Supplies & Consumer Welfare.
