Dismissed Cop Prime Accused Of 'Gang-Rape' In Puri

02 December 2019

Puri: A young woman was allegedly gang-raped by an ex-police constable and his associates at a Government quarter near Jhadeswari temple here on Monday.

The former policeman in question, Jitendra Sethi, has been arrested on the basis of the victim's complaint and is being interrogated by Kumbharapada police. Sethi was dismissed from Odisha police in 2016, a senior police official said.

According to the complainant, while she was waiting for a bus at Nimapara to go to Kakatpur Sethi and three others approached and offered her a lift. The girl hesitated at first, but agreed after Sethi identified himself as a policeman.

Instead of dropping the girl at her destination, the four persons took her to a deserted Government quarter behind Jhadeswari temple where she was allegedly raped by four of them. The victim somehow managed to escape from the spot and rushed to Kumbharapada police station.

During the incident, the woman managed to snatch Sethi's wallet which she handed over to the police. With the help of the documents in the wallet, Sethi's identity was ascertained. He was arrested later.

Police have launched a manhunt to nab others involved in the alleged crime. Meanwhile, the girl has been sent for medical tests.
