Sundargarh: As many as five people were killed and six others were critically injured as the Tata Magic they were travelling in met with an accident on MCL-Toparia Road near Gaikanapali area under Hemagiri police limits in Sundargarh district, in the wee hours of Saturday.
According to reports, the accident took place between 2:00 am and 2:30 am when a Tata Magic van they were travelling collided with a stationary trailer on the MCL-Toparia Road. The impact was so severe that five people, including the driver, died on the spot, while five others suffered severe injuries. The injured were rushed to Hemagiri Medical.
The deceased were part of a 10-member kirtan group from Chhattisgarh’s Chakabahal area. They were returning home after attending a death anniversary programme. According to sources, the driver failed to spot a stationary trailer due to dense fog, resulting in a catastrophic collision.
The deceased were identified as residents of the Kandadhuda and Samarpinda areas under Hemagiri police limits. Tension ran high in the locality following the mishap with villagers blocking the road and demanding compensation for the victims.
