Dhenkanal: Deputy Director of Factories and Boilers with his team visited Tata Steel Meramandali Works to conduct an inquiry into the accident in which 18 persons sustained injuries following escape of steam at the Blast Furnace Power Plant today at around 1.00 PM.
“A total of 18 persons have sustained injuries in the accident that occurred at the Tata Steel Meramandali Works. While 17 persons have sustained burn injuries, one person has suffered a psychological shock. All 18 have been admitted to Ashwini Hospital at Cuttack. 6-7 out of them have suffered major injuries and one who has suffered 90 percent burns is in the ICU,” informed Dhenkanal Collector Saroj Kumar Sethi.
Deputy Director of Factories & Boilers along with his team have arrived and they are investigating, Sethi added.
“The area where the accident occurred is at a height of a three-storey building. We visited the spot and the entry of others have been restricted. After inquiry if anyone is found guilty strict action will be taken against them,” said Dhenkanal SP Gyana Ranjan Mohapatra.
A Tata Steel official Mahoti Kumar Das speaking to reporters said that the accident took place while the repair was being undertaken of a leaking valve in the PP pipeline.
“Our technical team and Deputy Director of Factories and Boilers are investigating the incident to ascertain the exact cause,” informed Das.
He said both company employees and contractual workers have been injured in the accident.
