Bhubaneswar: A 20-year-old woman from Barihapur village under Parjang police station in Dhenkanal district on National Highway 55 died on the spot after a speeding oil tanker hit the bike she was riding with her husband and child.
The deceased has been identified as Lucy (20), wife of Rashmi Ranjan Khuntia.
The incident happened around 7:30 am today when the couple, Rashmi Ranjan and Lucy, accompanied by their 1.5-year-old son, were heading to Puri for Jagannath darshan.
As per reports, the oil tanker, coming from behind, hit the bike near Anand Nagar Chhak, causing severe injuries to Lucy, who succumbed to her injuries on the spot. Her husband, Rashmi Ranjan, suffered injuries and was rushed to Dhenkanal District Headquarters Hospital for treatment. Miraculously, their toddler son survived the accident without any injuries.
Tension ran high at the accident site following the accident as locals promptly blocked NH-55, demanding immediate action against the tanker driver. The protesters cited the poor condition of the highway responsible for the accident. The blockade brought traffic to a standstill, with vehicles stranded on both sides of the highway.
