Bhubaneswar: An alleged custodial death in custody at Choudwar station in Cuttack has led to the suspension of three police personnel.
The suspended officials include ACP Biswa Ranjan Sahu, Sub-Inspector Niranjan Goda, and constable Kamal Lochan Majhi.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi directed to suspend the three cops after Nayak’s wife filed a formal complaint in this regard accusing the police of beating him to death.
According to reports, Rasananda Nayak, a 38-year-old man from Shankarpur village in Dhenkanal district was detained on Sunday night in connection with a bike theft case. On the next day, his wife Puja received a call from police and she was told that her husband had fallen sick and was admitted to SCB Medical College and Hospital. Upon being reached, she found her husband dead at SCB.
Though reason behind Nayak’s death is yet to be ascertained, his family alleged that he was subjected to severe torture while in custody which led to his death. Besides, Nayak’s family members claimed that Nayak had confessed to the theft and returned two stolen bikes, but the police assaulted him black and blue.
On the other hand, police have revealed that eight criminal cases were pending against Nayak in various stations across Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Cuttack, and Bhubaneswar.
Meanwhile, Cuttack DCP Khilari Rishikesh Dnyandeo assured that allegations of custodial torture will be thoroughly investigated, and stringent action will be taken if any lapse on the part of the police is found.
