Jajpur: Odisha Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr. Mukesh Mahaling on Sunday said the state government is taking all necessary steps to contain the diarrhea outbreak in Jajpur district.
Speaking after a high-level review meeting, Dr. Mahaling said the government is focusing on three key areas: public awareness, breaking the chain of transmission, and strengthening surveillance.
“Our immediate priority is to raise awareness. In areas with suspected water contamination, tube wells and drinking water sources are being chlorinated and disinfected. Public announcements are being made in affected regions advising residents to use boiled water. Anyone showing symptoms must seek prompt medical care,” he said.
To curb the spread of infection, health officials are tracking all reported cases.
“The Diarrhea Nodal Officer is maintaining a database of patients. Prophylactic doses of ‘doxycycline’ are being administered to family members and close contacts,” he added.
Dr. Mahaling also stressed the need for inter-departmental coordination.
“We have activated a robust monitoring mechanism involving MPs, MLAs, and various government departments. The situation is under control and the public is urged not to panic,” he said.
Addressing reports of fatalities, the minister clarified that although initial media reports indicated 12 deaths, a government audit has confirmed five diarrhea-related fatalities so far. Investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the remaining reported deaths.
Dr. Mahaling visited three Community Health Centres (CHCs) and the District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) to assess the ground situation.
The review meeting, held at the Jajpur District Conference Hall, was attended by the District Collector, senior officials from the state and central health departments, Food Safety officials, and the State Public Health Director.
“We are closely monitoring developments and ensuring rapid response teams are in place. The government is fully committed to containing the outbreak swiftly and effectively,” he assured.
