Bhubaneswar: The regional office of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) here Wednesday forecast thunderstorms in several districts of Odisha today. The weather office has also issued a yellow warning for these districts.
“Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph are very likely to occur at one or two places in Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Nabarangpur, Nuapada, Bolangir, Gajapati, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Mayurbhanj, and Keonjhar districts,” the MeT has forecast.
“Thunderstorms with lightning are very likely to occur at one or two places in Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Sonepur, Boudh, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Sundargarh, Angul and Dhenkanal,” it added.
Occasional rain and hailstorms are also likely in some places. Heavy rainfall and hail will continue till May 6 in most of the districts in Odisha.
On the other hand, a low-pressure area is likely to form in the Southeast Bay of Bengal on May 6 and it will intensify within the next 48 hours. However, the IMD is still not certain whether it will develop into a cyclone.
A high-level meeting was held on Tuesday and 11 departments and Collectors were put on alert mode for effective handling of any emergency situation arising out of the weather system.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has also reviewed the situation and the state is fully prepared to deal with any emerging situation.
