Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Yellow Warning for several districts across Odisha, advising residents to “be aware” of potential thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds over the next five days.
According to the Midday Weather Bulletin released by the Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar, the line of withdrawal of the southwest monsoon continues to pass through northern India, yet Odisha remains under the influence of active weather conditions.
The state experienced widespread light to moderate rainfall in the last 24 hours, with several interior districts reporting heavy downpours.
The highest rainfall was recorded in Bhuban (Dhenkanal), Tikabali (Kandhamal), and Nawana (Mayurbhanj), each receiving 7 cm of rain. Other areas including Balisankara (Sundargarh), Telkoi (Keonjhar), and Jujumura (Sambalpur) also saw significant precipitation between 5-6 cm.
Forecast and Warnings
The IMD forecast predicts light to moderate rain or thundershowers at isolated places across the state for the next week.
A Yellow Warning (BE AWARE) is in effect for the next five days (from September 18 to September 22). During this period, thunderstorms with lightning and gusty surface winds reaching 30-40 kmph are very likely to occur at one or two places over multiple districts.
Days 1-3 (Sept 18-20): The warning is specifically for coastal districts like Balasore, Bhadrak, Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, and Ganjam, as well as Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, and Sundargarh.
Days 4-5 (Sept 21-22): The warning expands to include more interior districts such as Dhenkanal, Angul, Boudh, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Koraput, and Malkangiri.
No warning is currently in place for September 23rd and 24th. The outlook for the subsequent three days indicates no large change in the weather pattern.
The bulletin advises the public to take caution during thunderstorms, avoid taking shelter under trees, and stay indoors.
