Balasore: A tiger census has commenced in the Kuldiha Wildlife Sanctuary, located in the Nilgiri hills of Balasore district, from Thursday.
According to reports, a team from the forest department, on the instruction of District Forest Officer Prafulla Mallick, is conducting the census, covering the entire 272.75 sq km sanctuary. The census involves identifying tiger footprints and scat samples, as well as monitoring waterholes and other areas where tigers are likely to visit.
The sanctuary is home to various species, including leopards and tigers. Last year, a male tiger from Similipal sanctuary was spotted in the area, and there are reports of a tigress and her cubs residing in the sanctuary.
The census aims to determine the tiger population and identify the types of tigers present in the sanctuary. The forest department is concerned about the recent disappearance of the male tiger, and the census is expected to provide valuable insights into the sanctuary’s ecosystem.
