Puri: In a tragic incident, a one-and-a-half-year-old girl child lost her life after falling into an open borewell near the under-construction building of Puri District Headquarters Hospital (DDH) on Friday.

The deceased has been identified as the daughter of Ajay Nayak of Narendra Kona Mangala Sahi in Puri. The child had come to visit her maternal uncle’s house located near Raibahadur Lane, close to the site where a new building is being constructed within the hospital premises.

According to sources, the toddler was playing near the house when she accidentally slipped into an uncovered borewell situated near the construction area. The incident triggered panic in the locality. Efforts were reportedly made to rescue the child, but she could not be saved.

The mishap has raised serious concerns over safety measures at construction sites, particularly in residential areas and public institutions such as hospitals. Locals expressed anguish over the negligence that allegedly led to the borewell being left open and unattended.

The tragic death of the infant has cast a pall of gloom over the area, with grieving family members inconsolable over the loss.

Further details are awaited.
