Bhubaneswar: A dreaded Maoist commander gave up arms and surrendered before security forces in Sukma district of Chhattisgarh bordering Odisha.
The 38-year-old Nagesh alias Pedkam Erra who was allegedly involved in several deadly attacks on civilians and security forces, carried a bounty of Rs 8 lakh, national media reported quoting police sources.
He joined the main stream after meeting senior police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) officials, citing disappointment with the “inhumane” and “hollow” Maoist ideology, Sukma Superintendent of Police Kiran G Chavan told media.
Government’s rehabilitation policy also attracted him to give up violence and join the mainstream, he added.
Erra joined the outlawed outfil in 2003 as a local organisation squad (LOS) member. Later, he was elevated as the company commander.
He was allegedly involved in several deadly attacks, including the Tadmetla (then in Dantewada district) massacre in 2010, in which 76 troopers were killed, and the 2017 Burkapal attack wherein 25 CRPF personnel lost their lives, he said.
