Bhubaneswar: A team of Railway doctors successfully conducted a total knee replacement (TKR) surgery of a retired Railway employee at Divisional Railway Hospital, Khurda Road. This is for the first time over East Coast Railway to conduct such an operation by regular Railway doctors of Indian Railway Medical Services.
G Narasingha Rao (77), a retired Railway employee was suffering from severe Osteoarthritis in right knee joint since three years with severe bending deformity of the knee.
There was difficulty in walking, sitting and carrying out daily activities. Hence he underwent total knee replacement surgery on August 14 at Divisional Railway Hospital, Khurda road by a team of Railway doctors under the guidance of Chief Medical Superintendent (CMS) Gopal Chandra Das.
The entire surgery took 1 hr 45 minutes with minimal blood loss by using modern techniques. The surgical team of doctors included Divisional Medical Officer (Orthopedic) Dr Bhabani Sankar Behera, Asst.Chief Medical Superintendent (Anesthesia) Dr K.K Senapati and Sr Divisional Medical Officer (Anesthesia) from Waltair, Dr M Mahesh Kumar.
Now patient is able to walk normally after 20 hrs of surgery. This type of surgery is usually conducted at tertiary care hospital whose cost is approximately Rs 02 lakhs. Khurda Road’s Divisional Railway Manager Shashikant Singh has congratulated the team of doctors for their success.
